It takes a lot to run any business, and a microgreen farm is no exception. You have to research, vet, and remember various seed, soil, and packaging vendors. You need to create a website and build a presence on social media. There are food safety and legal considerations as well. What about finding funding, like grants for farmers? When hiring employees, you need to track their schedules and communicate weekly updates about the business. What about running crop trials and tracking yield data?
Great software and websites exist to help with some of these challenges. For example, QuickBooks is an affordable and user-friendly platform for bookkeeping. Squarespace is great for building a website, and Square is great for payment processing. What you need, though, is a single place to collect and organize all resources for all parts of your business. That’s where Notion comes in. Notion is like the Notes app, but on steroids. It can turn these varied business resources into a central database. Think of Notion as your business Wikipedia or business knowledge base.
We’ve used Notion to organize my farm, Piedmont Microgreens, for over two years. My team and I love using Notion, and we’ve built a great knowledge base for everything we need to find. To help more farmers take control of their businesses, we created a template of our Notion database. We're calling it the Microgreen Farm Operating System (OS). You can download the Notion template for free on the Notion marketplace and start customizing it for your farm. There are screen recordings embedded in the template to explain the purpose of the OS and the intention for each page.
If you want to contribute to making Microgreen Farm OS better for everyone, email any suggestions to Garrett - garrett@microgreenmanager.com.
Enjoy!
